Copyright is a legal concept giving the creator of an original work exclusive right to it, usually for a limited time but it also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work. copyright is said too be territorial and do not extend beyond a specific state. today however this is less relevant since most countries are parties to at least one such agreement.
The origins of copyright in Britain were from a reaction to printers monopolies at the beginning of the 18th century. Copyright has grown from legal concept regulating copying rights in the publishing of books and maps to one with a significant effect on nearly every modern industry covering sound recording, films, photographs software and architectural works.
Several exclusive rights typically attached to the holder of a copyright:
- to produce copies or reproduction of the work to sell those copies
- to import or export the work
- to create derivative works
- to perform or display the work publicly
- to sell or assign these rights to others
- to transmit or display by radio or video
It all goes back to the printers! Nice overview.
